Transportation

A well-functioning transportation system is essential for connecting jobs, housing, and everything in our communities. The 5th Middlesex District has a range of options for driving, walking, biking and transit. Here are ways Carey would strengthen the transportation system for the district:

MBTA - The Mass Bay Transit Authority has made lots of progress clearing the backlog of maintenance and upgrades, and improving service. We need to keep it up to ensure our transit system is stable for the future.

Prioritize transit reliability for riders, by continuing stable funding & capital investment in the system
Push for expanded suburban bus service for routes and hours, so that people can get across town in Malden and Stoneham, and workers can get home from late night jobs
Advocate for key investments for the district, including expanded Haverhill line track capacity for the commuter rail, and refurbishing the Malden Center T station

Pedestrian safety - Carey has been a strong advocate for pedestrian safety as a city councillor, securing funding and earmarks for better crosswalks and speed humps. Carey also helped re-start the Walking Bus program in Malden to help kids get to school safely. Carey will fight to retain local funding for projects like these from ride share dividends and mitigation funding agreements, and explore new grant programs.

Shared use paths - Carey supports shared use paths, including the Northern Strand Trail, the Tri-Community Greenway and the Spot Pond Brook Greenway. We need to continue to fund and improve these pathways to give people options for ways to get around.

Chapter 90 funding & road paving - As a primary source of state funding for local road paving, we need to make sure Chapter 90 also keeps up with inflation. Carey successfully advocated for additional road paving funds as a City Councillor, and will keep investing in our infrastructure as a state senator.
