Open Government

The Statehouse should be as transparent as town hall. In a time when our democracy is under attack, our leaders need to build trust in the workings of government. In a democracy, it's essential that voters can see how decisions get made. That includes:

• Apply sunshine laws for public records and open meetings to the state legislature, just like local governments and most other states

• Follow the will of the voters, who overwhelmingly supported the ability of the State Auditor to audit the state legislature; utilize a neutral and third-party expert as needed to resolve disputes on the issue and move forward

• Record all committee and floor votes

• Make committee meetings more accessible

• Ensure bills and amendments are available with enough time before vote

• Create a non-partisan legislative research agency

• Shift key programs from temporary authorization to regular law, to avoid annual bottlenecking as part of the budget process

Carey has taken the Act On Mass "Every District Accountable" Pledge,
which includes the following five commitments:

• Vote in favor of bills that Carey has co-sponsored on committee and floor votes

• Host at least two in-person constituent town halls per year in the district

• Support legislation to provide public funding for elections

• Vote to reinstate 8-year term limits for Speaker and Senate President

• Uphold the will of the voters on good government ballot initiatives, namely: Public Records and Same Day Voter Registration
