Every part of our society is being changed by technology, and we need to protect what matters most. Carey supports a moratorium on data centers, restrictions on surveillance, and guardrails for AI. We want technology to make our lives better, instead of replacing our jobs, surveilling our communities and taking away our support systems.
Data center moratorium - Carey voted for a year-long moratorium on data centers in Malden, and supports a state-wide moratorium to make sure we have protections in place. Data centers should:
Use clean energy and not raise residents' utility bills
Have a plan for water access that does not drain our fresh water system
Protect neighborhoods from noise and disruption
Give communities choices about where centers are located
AI guardrails - AI technology is changing fast, and it's being driven by some of the most wealthy, powerful companies in the world. We need to put guardrails in now, to protect our community from the worst impacts.
Create a Workers' AI Policy Advisory Council so that teachers, health care workers, union members and employees have a voice in how AI policy gets shaped in real time
Support the FAIR Act, proposed by the MA AFL-CIO, which prohibits AI use in high-stakes employment decisions
Set statewide research-based standards for use of AI in schools, so that our kids are not guinea pigs for new technologies
Stop AI insurance denials, including health care coverage and property insurance
Social media for kids - Put smart restrictions in place for kids' use of social media, that does not require uploading sensitive personal data
Surveillance - Tech companies are selling our data without any oversight, so we need to protect Massachusetts residents from intrusive surveillance.
Restrict the use of Flock cameras, and other license plate readers and AI-driven surveillance technology
Limit how long data can be kept (e.g. 7 days)
Set standards for sharing
Require an auditable paper trail of searches, to monitor any improper uses
Require local elected officials to "opt in"
Support strong data privacy laws and restrict data brokers
